WWE Superstar Alberto Del Rio was attacked by a fan in Puerto Rico on Saturday while fulfilling a commitment for the World Wrestling Council.
Del Rio was wrestling Ray Gonzalez when he escaped outside the ring to catch his breath and was struck multiple times by a fan. The current United States champion then grabbed the fan until security was able to get to the scene and escort him outside of the arena. Gonzalez and Del Rio then continued their match.
Del Rio returned to WWE programming at October’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view. However, while he is under a full-time contract with WWE, he was contractually committed for independent work that predated his signing. WWE has allowed Del Rio to fulfill those commitments as part of his new deal.
That decision may have come under scrutiny if Del Rio had been injured in the melee. He’s become an integral part of The Authority’s League of Nations stable, which was formed after Sheamus cashed in his Money in the Bank Briefcase to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
At the very least, this is evidence why WWE is typically apprehensive about its talents working outside dates.
