In a classic case of hit them where it hurts, a 37-year-old woman on Wednesday overpowered a chain-snatcher and thrashed him using her karate skills in Naranpura, India

The incident happened in the morning when Jigna Vyas, a resident of Naranpura Ghanshyam Apartments, went for a walk. While on her return she sensed that someone was following her. As she turned back she saw a young man in his early twenties behind her. The man had covered his face with handkerchief.

Anticipating that the man was a chain-snatcher and targeting the gold chain she was wearing, Jigna immediately unlocked it. And indeed the man came closer and tried to snatch the chain but failed in his attempt.

The frustrated assailant caught her by her neck. However, since Jignawas trained in karate, she used her self-defense techniques and overpowered him resulting in making the chain-snatcher fall on the ground.

She kept on thrashing him as the crowd just looked on and never came to help her. Sensing trouble the chain-snatcher ran to the other side of the road where one of his accomplice was waiting for him. However, a smart Jigna jotted down the motorcycle number.

Jigna then approached the Naranpura police where she narrated the whole incident. Police have registered a complaint and has launched a man-hunt to nab the assailants. Talking to TOI, Jigna said that she has no regrets that the crowd was a mere spectator. One cannot expect police to protect you everywhere hence self-defense is the best defense, Jigna added. She further stated that women should go for such classes.
