Former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes was involved in a serious truck accident this morning in Illinois after his truck collided with a moving train.

UFC President Dana White, while speaking to ESPN, said that he has been in contact with Hughes’ family and that the former UFC fighter has suffered head trauma in the accident.

“Apparently he has head trauma,” White said. “His family is traveling to him now.”

It is unknown at this time about how the accident happened and if Hughes was driving the truck, or was a passenger in the vehicle.

White also told ESPN that Hughes was assisting a friend with something before the accident occurred.

Hughes himself recently made news in the MMA world by teasing a comeback, something fellow retired fighter Chuck Liddell has been doing as well.

The former UFC Welterweight Champion last competed at UFC 135 in September 2011, the now retired fighter was knocked out by Josh Koscheck that night. Hughes is a two time former UFC Welterweight Champion, defeating Carlos Newton at UFC 38 and Georges St. Pierre at UFC 50 to claim the championship.

Hughes’ longtime manager Monte Cox told MMA Fighting that Hughes is now “awake and responsive,” and that his eyes are closed, but he can squeeze hands.
